Understanding Order Book
An order book is a real-time display of all outstanding buy orders (bids) and sell orders (asks) for a trading pair, organized by price level. It's the core mechanism for price discovery on most perpetual DEXes.
Structure of an order book: - Bids (buy orders): Listed below current price, highest first - Asks (sell orders): Listed above current price, lowest first - Spread: The gap between the highest bid and lowest ask
The order book shows: - Available liquidity at each price level - Where large orders are clustered - Potential support and resistance levels - The best available prices for immediate execution
Types of orders: - Limit orders: Placed in the book at a specific price - Market orders: Execute immediately against existing book orders
For RWA perpetual DEXes: - Hyperliquid uses a fully on-chain order book - Lighter focuses on institutional order book trading - Some DEXes use AMM/oracle models instead
Order book trading offers: - Transparent price discovery - Better control over execution price - Lower fees for makers - Clear view of market depth
Reading the order book helps traders: - Gauge immediate liquidity - Identify potential price walls - Optimize entry and exit prices - Understand market sentiment
